The natural environment of Nafpaktos is perhaps the main reason for visiting the region. More than 40% of the region’s area is covered by forests, thus making Nafpaktos an amazing mountainous paradise for nature lovers. Combined with the waterways that end in beautiful beaches, it makes it truly unique. In Nafpaktos you will find the river Evinos with its tributaries, Kotsalo and Porriaris and the river Mornos, which is also the natural boundary between the Prefectures of Aitoloakanarnia and Fokida. The wonderful landscape is complemented by the manmade lake of Evinos.
The best way to discover the natural scenery of Nafpaktos is to walk along the hiking trails, drink water from the crystal-clear mountain springs and spend the night in one of the hostels and mountain shelters.
There are many well marked trails for all your hiking needs. Varasova, Klokova, Rigani, Tsakalaki or Omalia, or Tsekoura etc. are excellent hiking trails recommended by the Greek Mountaineering Association of Nafpaktos and are available for climbsor mountain hikes to all nature and mountain lovers. A very interesting route is the climb to the village of Niokastro, through beautiful natural scenery that will surely charm you! For those who love nature as well as off-roading adventures, the mountainous region of Nafpaktos has plenty of 4×4 routes you can take! Drive on the forest dirt roads, which pass through dreamy landscapes and cross rivers and beautiful small villages!
Satisfying all interests, a special activity that you can enjoy in the natural environment of Nafpaktos is bird watching, which takes place on specific, marked trails.
Finally, if you find yourself in Nafpaktos, don’t miss a visit to the ZeliosΓη(EARTH)BotanicalGarden. Just 25 kilometers outside Nafpaktos and 20 kilometers from the historic town of Messologhi, in the “Aidoni” location of the Chalkia area in the Municipality of Nafpaktos, you will find more than 25 acres of land stretching along the River Evinos, with about 3,500 species of plants in 6 thematic gardens.
Discover aromatic, medicinal, culinary herbs, common and rare species of Greek flora, as well as many herbs and vegetables and learn about their history and use. On your way out, don’t forget to pass through the glass recycling tower, built from about 12,500 glass bottles!
