Look back at the memories and legends of the Naval Battle!
The Museum of the Demetrios and Egli Botsaris Foundation is housed in the mansion known as the “Botsaris Tower”. The Tower stands tall northeast of the West Gate of the lower city (Kato Poli). The mansion is probably built in three different periods. It is believed that his first wing was built by the Venetians before the fall of Constantinople, with the help of craftsmen from Florence. The fact that it is touching the castle wall on one side bears witness to the fact that a senior Venetian official probably lived there.
During the Ottoman occupation it suffered several alterations, both external and internal. Its current form was essentially determined by the restoration of the structure that took place after the earthquake of 1953. Today the tower belongs to the Demetrios and Egli Botsaris Foundation. It was occupied by Notis Botsaris, the last warlord of Souli, after the liberation of Nafpaktos in 1829. His descendants continued to live in it.
It consists of two parts, the western tower that was probably built in the 15th century and the east tower that was built in the 16th century. Here you will admire the permanent exhibition that shows the Lepanto Naval battle (7 October 1571) with about 80 copies of paintings and engravings created by great artists of the time. Also, there are Spanish armors from the 16th century, flags and colors of the countries involved in the battle, a replica of the flagship, offerings to Western churches, paintings of the Heads of State who formed the Holy Coalition, and tapestries of the Gian Adrea Doria that were weaved in Brussels, on drawings by painter Luka Kampiazo. Cultural and art events are often hosted in the Foundation’s garden.
The Museum is open daily from 9am-1pm Tel.: 2634029779
