Traveling on the rare “avenue of the mountains”!
The River Evinos, or Lykormas or Fidaris stems from the Vardoussia mountain range and after travelling for about 110 km, it flows into the northern shores of the Gulf of Patras. Ethnographer D. Lukopoulos has described the river as the “avenue of the mountains” since it crosses the entire mountainous region of Nafpaktia.
In the heart of the mountainous Nafpaktia we find the manmade lake of the Evinos River (Evinolimni), 6 km from the village of Agios Dimitrios. Its perimeter is 32 km, and it is set in an unrivaled green, mountainous landscape. The construction of the earth dam (127 m high and 610 m long) was completed in June 2001, and then the filling process of the reservoir started, which was completed 1 year later. The artificial lake was then created with a maximum capacity of 138 million cubic meters of water. Through a tunnel with a total length of 29,393 m, the waters of the Evinos reservoir are transported and channeled into the reservoir of Mornos river for the water supply of Attica.
The construction of the dam and the creation of the lake have changed the landscape of the region as well as its microclimate. There is no doubt that a beautiful natural landscape has been created for the surrounding villages: Kastania, Agios Dimitrios and Perdikovrysi (formerly Sinista) to the south and Neochori, Arachova and Klepa, an area particularly attractive to hikers, mountain bikers and 4X4 off-roaders.
There is access 81 km north of Nafpaktos (access via Platanos or via Ano Chora) and 52 km south of Karpenisi.
