The famous tower-house
Kannaveiko is a three-floor stone-built structure (traditional tower-house) dating back to the Ottoman rule times in the village of Ano Chora, Nafpaktia. Its stone construction features with elaborate cornerstones and impressive woodwork. It was built by the prominent Byzantine family of Kannavos, who came to Megali Lombotina (former name of Ano Chora) after the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
The Kannavos family played a major role in the Greek Revolution of 1821. Konstantinos Kannavos and later his brothers Georgios and Anagnostis (Logothetis) Kannavos, as well as their uncle Antonis, were among the first to be initiated into the “Filiki Etairia” (Society of Friends).
Another notable fact about the tower-house is that around 1816, members of the rival family of Sotiropoulos blew up the building, killing everyone in it except Antonis’ son Nikos. The incident became legendary and is cited in Karkavitsa’s collected works as well as in folk songs. The tower-house was rebuilt shortly after and it was recently renovated to its former glory. Today it operates as a traditional guest house.
