For nature and forest lovers, mountainous Nafpaktia is the ideal destination. Ano Chora (old name Megali Lompotina), the most famous village in the area (previously belonged to the Municipality of Apodotia), is built at 1,050 meters above sea level, on the northern slopes of Mount Sirta. Picturesque and beautiful, it impresses visitors with its natural beauty, narrow cobblestone streets in the old market area, traditional coffee shops and the church of Agia Paraskevi. Equally exciting is exploring the surrounding area. Oak, fir, beech, oak, chestnut and cherry trees, cedars, wild flowers, herbs, mushrooms and wild orchids create a fairytale setting with striking color changes every season of the year.

In this stunning environment, many species of small and large mammals, birds and reptiles, such as wild boar, roes, deer, foxes, wolves, lynx, ferrets, hares, hedgehogs, squirrels, partridges, doves, vultures, magpies, blackbirds, grouse, woodpeckers, owls and eagles and golden eagles, dentrogalia, vipers, saitoures, tyflitis, fyllodaktylos and turtles.

Marked ancient trails start from Ano Chora and cross dreamy landscapes through rivers, gorges and running waters, connecting villages and scattered small settlements. There are many options for hikers: The path of Hercules, (Ano Chora – Ampelakiotissa, 3 hours), the path of Atalantis (Ano Chora – Kryoneria, 4 hours and 15΄), the path of Diianira (Ano Chora – Podos, 3 hours), the path of Oinea (Ano Chora – Kato Chora, 1 hour and 45΄).

The “blonde fox” path is a rather easy hike – a 6 km path through a dense chestnut tree forest. A truly unique experience for both younger and older hikers. In October, the entire village as well as the visitors pick chestnuts from the trees. They enjoy a drink of tsipouro and chestnuts in the “Tsipouro and chestnut festival” held every year in the second 10day period of October. By dusk on Friday, the stills for the tsipouro and the fire for the chestnuts are set up on the square and from Saturday morning the first visitors arrive, while the tables are filled with pies, fritters, baklavas and other local sweets and dishes prepared by the women of the village. November is Mushroom month in Ano Chora and a favorite destination for every foodie.

Limnopoula

Between Kryoneri and Kato Vasiliki there is the beach of Limnopoula (not organized) with wonderful fine sand and crystal clear waters, in the shadow of Mount Varasova.

Quite secluded, if you go on a quiet day, you will enjoy the calmest swim and feel the authenticity and simplicity of nature.

Ano Chora

Ano Chora (former name Megali Lompotina), the most famous village in the area (previously the seat of the Municipality of Apodotia), is built at 1,050 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Sirta. Picturesque and beautiful, it impresses with its natural beauty, the narrow, cobbled streets in the old market area, the traditional coffee shops and the imposing church of Agia Paraskevi. Next to the church, you can see “Karnavalos”, the small old colorful bus that connected Ano Chora and Kato Chora with Nafpaktos until 1983.

In October, everyone in the village as well as the visitors pick chestnuts. They drink ‘tsipouro’ with their roasted chestnuts in the “Tsipouro and Chestnut festival” that takes place annually from the 10th to the 20th of October. November is mushroom month in Ano Chora and a favorite destination for all foodies. In February there is the “Tsigarithra Feast” that delights all visitors. Grilling stations are set around the village and ‘tsigarithres’ (roasted pork bites) are offered free of charge to guests with potatoes and wine or tsipouro.

Ano Chora is 55 km from Nafpakto, 275 km from Athens, 75 km from Patras, 90 km from Karpenisi, and 222 km from Ioannina.

Agios Dimitrios

After the construction of the Evinos dam, Agios Dimitrios became a quaint lakeside village and thus has been given a new life and prospects, like all the other “Evinochoria”: Neochori, Arachova, Klepa and Perdikovrysi, all overlooking the beautiful man-made Evinos lake. The village is situated on the north-western slopes of Mount Ardine and has beautiful, scattered houses set amidst beautiful gardens and groves of chestnut trees. A grid of streams, creeks, groves of oak, chestnut, cedar, plane and fir trees create a “green” heaven and an ideal mountain destination, with many options for family excursions, hiking and many 4×4 off-road routes. During the first 10 days of October each year, Agios Dimitrios hosts the annual Chestnut Festival. Roasted chestnuts and local spoon-sweets (krana, walnut, cherry) as well as local delicacies are served to visitors. There are many accommodation options, as well as great restaurants for all visitors.

Κλεπά

Κεφαλοχώρι του Δήμου Πλατάνου, προικισμένο με μια μοναδική φύση, χτισμένο στη δεξιά όχθη του ποταμού Ευήνου. Καταπράσινα βουνά, ήχοι από γάργαρα νερά, μία φρεσκάδα αέρα και μυρωδιές από τα αιωνόβια δέντρα χαρακτηρίζουν την περιοχή. Ο χείμαρρος Μέγα ρέμα χωρίζει την Κλεπά σε δυο συνοικίες, την Άνω και την Κάτω Κλεπά. Η Άνω Κλεπά ακουμπά στο βουνό Κοκκινιάς και η Κάτω Κλεπά στις δυτικές πλαγιές του βουνού Ξεροβούνι. Το υψόμετρο του χωριού ορίζεται περίπου στα 780μ.

Όσες είναι οι συνοικίες του χωριού (4) τόσες είναι και οι ενορίες. Ένα πέτρινο γεφύρι με την ομώνυμη ονομασία γεφύρι των Στενών βρίσκεται στα στενά της Κλεπάς και είναι ένα από τα πιο όμορφα αξιοθέατα του χωριού. Στα παλαιότερα χρόνια  έφερνε σε επικοινωνία τους κατοίκους του χωριού με τα απέναντι χωριά Κρυονέρια, Ελατόβρυση κ.α.. Πάνω από το γεφύρι υπάρχουν τα απρόσιτα βράχια της Αποκλείστρας της Κλεπάς που την περίοδο της Τουρκοκρατίας πολλοί κάτοικοι κρύβονταν για να γλιτώσουν από τους Τούρκους. Τώρα πλέον εδώ συναντάς σπάνια αρπακτικά πτηνά, όπως οι αετοί και τα γεράκια.

Στην περιοχή Κοκκινιά υπάρχει το σπήλαιο της Γαβαθότρυπας με μοναδικούς σταλακτίτες και σταλαγμίτες. Κάνεις δεν πρέπει να χάσει την επίσκεψη στην Δρακοσπηλιά που βρίσκεται στο Ξεροβούνι ενώ προτείνεται ανεπιφύλακτα η πεζοπορία προς την κορυφή «Κούκουρος» μέσα από μια μοναδική διαδρομή 25 λεπτών μέσα από ελατοδάσος.

Antirrio

The settlement is located on the northern tip of the Rio – Antirrio strait, right on the Antirrio cape. In ancient times it was named Molykrion Rion from the nearby ancient town of Molykria (now the archaeological site at Ellinika, in Velvina Nafpaktos).

During the Ottoman occupation, Antirrion acquired strategic importance when the Turks built major fortress (Antirrion Fortress) and many battles were fought there. In 1603 it was conquered by the Knights of Malta for a short period of time. The fortress was destroyed during the Turkish-Venetian wars, nevertheless it was afterward rebuilt and fortified by the Venetians. Later on, the Ottomans took over the fortress again and it remained under Ottoman command during the Greek War of Independence until 1829, when it was surrendered to the Greeks.

Today the settlement of Antirrio is the main transportation link between Western Sterea Ellada and the Peloponnese, either through the ferry service connection Rio with Antirrio or via the spectacular cable bridge named “Harilaos Trikoupis”.

Visitors can swim in the organized beach in Antirrio enjoying the view of Rion and the impressive bridge. Antirrio is very friendly to the visitor with many hotels, ample parking spaces, excellent restaurants, a beautiful promenade where you can take a stroll or ride your bike and vista points that overlook the Gulf of Patras. Antirrio is located 9 km from Nafpaktos.

Makyneia

Makyneia is a beautiful resort town with excellent beaches featuring excellent white sand, and clear, warm and shallow sea waters. It has a lovely small harbor, full of fishing boats that supply the famous fish taverns of the village with fresh seafood every day.

North of the town there is the small open-air theatre of the ancient town of Makyneia, where theatrical performances are held every summer. Other interesting places to visit are the settlement of Agrapidokampos with the famous natural spring baths as well as the village of Riza in the foothills of Mount Klokovas. The church of Zoodochos Pigis is located in a beautiful natural environment filled with old plane trees on the northern end of the Agrapidokampos fields.

Visitors can enjoy watersports, horseback riding and hiking in Klokovas, while a visit to the Zelios Gi Botanical Garden is a must-do for all visitors. Makyneia is 13km from Nafpaktos and 4.5km from Antirrio.

Arachova

Arachova is a small mountain village in the Municipality of Nafpaktos, near the border with Evrytania. It is built on the slopes of the Vardousia mountains and has a panoramic view of Evinolimni (Evinos lake). The gorgeous landscape is full of fir, plane, walnut and cherry trees, while there are many streams and creeks running through the forest. The longstanding houses of the village, mostly made of slate rock, have unique architectural elements, comprising a wide spectrum of local building traditions, with serious influence from the architecture of Epirus. The Sismanaion mansion, dating back to 1898, is located in the center of the village, near the old school which today houses a small folk-art museum. An interesting excursion is a visit to Megali Vrysi (Large Spring) with crystal clear fresh water, century-old plane trees and a huge cave where the water comes from.

Arachova is a place of rare beauty and ideal to visit all times of the year. Whether fall, winter, spring or summer the landscape is a magical heaven full of scents and colors. There are many accommodation options in the village, as well as in the villages around Evinos lake, offering top quality services to visitors. Elatou

Elatou is the ideal escape destination, lying at 1,050 meters above sea level on the verdant slopes of the Kerasovouni peak. Here, nature really steals the show. Fir trees together with chestnut trees, kermes, oak trees and apple trees invite you for the most majestic excursions and outdoor activities.

A church dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, built in 1864 by Epirot stone masons, dominates the center of the village. Strolling along the cobblestone streets of the village the visitor can stop at one of the traditional coffee shops and enjoy authentic Greek coffee and also try local delicacies (aromatic honey, pies, jams, freshly baked bread, roasted meats etc.) in the village shops and restaurants.

The area is abundant with many small churches, built in spots of unparalleled beauty, such as Zoodochos Pigi in Kamares, Agia Sofia and Agios Elias on the peak of Omalias.

If you enjoy off-road driving ask the locals to show you the dirt road to Alepochori (11 km). From here you will head to “Harachi” hill and then you will continue to the peak of Omalia where there is a wonderful plateau with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the Corinthian gulf.

Abelakiotissa

Abelakiotissa, also known by its former name Kozitsa, is a village in the middle of a lush green landscape, like most villages in the area. A short distance from Ano Chora, under the impressive rocky peak Tsekoura, it overlooks the wild Kakavos gorge, where the famous stone bridge is located. All those nature lovers seeking tranquility and natural beauty, will discover that Abelakiotissa is the ideal choice for a refreshing trip away from city life. Here life is simple and the pace is much more relaxed. All visitors must visit the famous monastery of Panagia Ampelakiotissa, where they can admire relics of great religious and artistic value, such as the holy icon of the Virgin Mary and the Epitaph of Mariora dating back to 1735.

Kato Chora

Kato Chora (formerly Mikra or Kato Lobotina) is built on the southern slopes of the Omalias mountain range, between two creeks that meet and form the stream Lobotianitiko. Peraloggos with its chestnut trees groves, the green mountain slopes full of oak, cedar, fir trees, plane trees and at the top of the village the Kefalari location with lush vegetation – fir, cedar, shortoaks and chestnut trees – constitute a true glorification of nature. Although a smaller village than Ano Chora, but equally beautiful and quieter, it is an ideal spot for hiking trips. The stone and wooden houses that resemble Swiss chalets, surrounded by the lush mountainous vegetation, give it a fairy-tale essence.

Gribovo

The name Gribovo in Slavic means an area with lots of waters and it is located east of the Venetian harbor. On the west side of the beach there is a children’s playground with ducks and swans swimming in the crystal-clear running waters perfectly accustomed to by-passers!

Enjoy carefree beach holidays with sun loungers, parasols, beach sports and a lifeguard on duty. For extreme sports enthusiasts it is considered one of the best and safest kitesurfing beaches in Greece. The warm and shallow waters make the beach suitable for beginners too, especially when the northern winds are blowing. You may rent the necessary equipment and enjoy the unique experience of kiteboarding.

There are many options in hotels, ouzeri, cafes and taverns under the old shadow-casting plane trees. An idyllic beach for romantic walks, gazing at the sun going down where the sea meets the sky.

Grammeni Oxia

Grammeni Oxia is hidden in the arms of mountains and forests, where the only commodity (as it has been said) is the abundant wild beauty of its landscapes. The whole area is a monument of natural beauty! Natural landscape of infinite beauty that has not been altered in any way by human intervention. Here is the southernmost beech forest in Europe, in the north of the village, extending to the peak of Mount Othas, the Sarandana, in the heart of Roumeli.

This small mountain hamlet of Aitoloakarnania is located on the northwest slopes of Vardousia at an altitude of 1,130 meters. There are only few people in the winter, but hundreds in the summer. The small village square is the meeting point for young and old particularly in August.

The scent from the burning fireplaces, as well as from local meat-roasting rotisserie grills and the famous oven roasted specialties, are a temptation for all visitors to the village.

At an altitude of 1,740 m you will find the mountain shelter of Oxia. The shelter is named “L. Eftaxias”, it operates all year and it is very well organized.

The Hiking routes of the region are very popular.

To get here from Nafpakto, first pass the villages Kato Dafni – Pefkaki – Filothei – Intersection and then head towards Varnakova – Krokilio – Pentaji – Artotina – Grammeni Oxia. From the national road Lamia-Karpenisi, after passing Makrakomi, head towards the village of Gardiki Omilaion and then continue to Grammeni Oxia.

Eleftheriani

Situated amidst the beautiful mountains of Nafpaktia, built in two facing slopes at an altitude of 760 meters, Eleftheriani is the ideal destination for all those seeking to take a deep breath of nature and leave behind the hectic life of the city. Only 39 kilometers away from Nafpaktos, the natural landscape is truly impressive with dense forests full of fir, cedar, chestnut and oak trees, 4 great streams crossing the area, breathtaking ravines, the famous Dragonspring, the old watermill and the many fresh water springs. The stone-built houses of the village blend harmoniously with the natural environment, creating a fairy tale image of village life from another era.

The residents of Eleftheriani keep their traditions alive and they host a large country fair every year on July 26 that attracts many visitors from the surrounding area.

A short distance north of Palaiopyrgos, you’ll find the church of Agia Kyriaki at an altitude of over 1,000 meters amidst a lush forest of fir trees. This is a spot of unsurpassed beauty and a popular destination for mushroom hunters.

Kato Vassiliki

Im östlich gelegenen Varasova befindet sich die Küstensiedlung Kato Vasiliki. Sie ist ein Anziehungspunkt für viele Urlauber, vor allem in den Sommermonaten, denn sie verfügt über wunderschöne Strände (Kato Vasiliki und Limnopoula), herrliche Natur und bedeutende archäologische Stätten.

Auf dem Hügel von Agia Triada, östlich der Siedlung, sind die Ruinen der Akropolis der antiken Stadt “Chalkis” erhalten, die in Homers Ilias erwähnt wird. Auf der südöstlichen Seite von Varasova sind Teile der imposanten Mauern der befestigten Burg von Pagkali erhalten, die den Bewohnern im Falle einer feindlichen Bedrohung als Zufluchtsort diente.

Die große dreischiffige frühchristliche Basilika dominiert den Hügel der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit. Die Kirche wurde im 5. oder 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. erbaut, und innerhalb der frühchristlichen Kirche befinden sich die Ruinen einer kleineren byzantinischen Kirche mit einem Lagerraum, einem Altar, Zellen und einem Friedhof.

Von Kato Vasiliki aus kann man mit dem Boot die Klause von Agios Nikolaos in Varasova besuchen, und nicht weit von der Siedlung entfernt befindet sich die byzantinische Kirche Panagia Panaxiotissa.

Jedes Jahr am 6. August organisiert der Kultur- und Bildungsverein von Vasiliki das “Fest der Ziege” am Strand des Dorfes. Während des Festes haben die Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, ein traditionelles Schleppnetz zu ziehen, gebratene Sardinen zu probieren und ein einzigartiges traditionelles Festmahl zu genießen.

Das Küstendorf Kato Vasiliki ist ein zeitloser Urlaubsort für Liebhaber eines einfachen, entspannten und ruhigen Urlaubs. Es ist 28 km von Nafpaktos, 30 km von Patras und 23 km von Messolonghi entfernt.

Kryoneria

The village of Kryoneria, built at an altitude of 1,200 meters in mountainous Nafpaktia, is a green heaven combining an amazing natural landscape with culture. Its picturesque setting and natural beauty truly impress any visitor. A visit to the Kryoneria Folk Museum allows the visitor to learn about the long and rich historical and cultural heritage of the area.

The Honey and Walnut Festival takes place every August in the village’s stone paved square. It is a special day of joy and celebration, since many locals who live abroad come back to the village for their summer holidays and meet up with friends and relatives, while everyone helps prepare for the feast at the traditional coffee shop.

Both residents and visitors enjoy taking long walks among the fir trees, as well as taking the well-marked hiking trails to the church of Profitis Ilias or even the climb to Mount Tsekoura with its highest peak at 1,732 m., from where the view is simply amazing. One of the most popular and delightful trails is the one towards the Pergari Observation point, from where the view to Evinolimni is simply magical, especially at sunset when the sun sets behind the mountains. Kryoneria is 49km from Nafpaktos and has many facilities catering to tourists.

Palaiopyrgos

Palaiopyrgos (previously called Velvitsaina) lies in the western foothills of Mount Vlasinias. It got its name from the old Towerhouse (Koulia tou Kanavou or Kanavopyrgos) which is located in the rural region of Marathias – the region once belonged to the Kanavos family, a prominent family of landlords in Kravara.

Today the village has 8 neighborhoods and 17 churches. In the past there were 4 watermills operating at different locations and a windmill in the Anemakis mountain saddle. It constitutes a illustrative example of special use buildings, very important when studying the history of architecture. As part of a wider watermill region they are a testimony of the small business activity and the economic life in the area.

The water sources and the plentiful natural springs of the village made possible the development of agriculture and animal herding and contributed to the creation of an amazing green landscape with fields and valleys of exceptional beauty.

The “Cherry Festival” takes place at the beginning of June each year and visitors are offeredfresh cherries, cherry pies and cherry spoon sweets.

Platanos Village

Platanos is a traditional village, one of the main villages in northwestern Nafpaktia. It lies on the slopes of Mount Alonaki, at an altitude of 850m., amidst a lush forest with clusters of firs and deciduous trees (elms, wild apples, maples, oaks, etc.), in the heart of the ​​Kravara region. The stone-built, two-storey houses, the cobbled streets, the picturesque square with the imposing church of Agios Nikolaos testify to the prosperity of its inhabitants, especially in the late 19th and early 20th century. This beautiful mountain village got its name from a large plane tree that was standing in the location Megali Vrysi.

In the picturesque village square you will find the National Resistance Museum and the Folk Art Museum. There are many accommodation facilities to choose from as well as many restaurants serving delicious traditional dishes.

If you hike up to the peak of Mount Alonaki, you will enjoy a wonderful view of the river Evinos. The small church of Agion Taxiarchon lies above the village in a beautiful green landscape with old smalloak trees. Take the trail from Platanos to the Artotiva bridge (Achladokastro), which in its most part is stone paved, comfortable and well maintained.

The once separate settlement of Kato Platanos has become part of the village of Platanos today and it is ideal for a nice walk since it is only 10 minutes away from the village on the southeast slope of the Alonaki mountain.

Leaving Platanos behind, after about 10 km, you will find one of the most historic inns in Greece: The Chani of Liolios which has been standing there among the fir trees since 1819. It is highly recommended to try the excellent food in its restaurant, especially in the winter when they serve local specialties such as wildboar stifado, goat stew, handmade pies as well as their own homemade wine and tripouro.

Platanos is 50 km away from Nafpaktos and 27 km from Thermo

Simou

Simou, one of the main villages of Nafpaktia (former seat of the Municipality of Pylini), is located on the southwestern foothills of Mount Kalpaki. It is considered the pre-eminent craftsman village of Nafpaktia and is stands out for the architecture of its houses. The village square is dominated by the traditional three-storey stone building where the City Hall was housed and today is being reconstructed to operate as a traditional guest house.

However, Simou is widely known in the area as the village of stone masons. Taking a pleasant stroll around the village you will see the stone-built Vrisi Liontari (Lion Fountain) and at a short distance another fountain the “Trani Vrysi” as well as the Giannias Boule watermill. You may also visit the location “Chaikali” with ruins from old stone houses and many well-maintained threshing facilities.

Another interesting spot to visit is the settlement Kampos Simou. The stream Poriaris is situated to the south of the settlement and runs west to meet the Evinos river. The locals call the settlement Simokamposand its biggest attraction is the old stone bridgeover Poriaris, built around 1885. The bath-spring Stahtis is also located at a short distance. The settlement is surrounded by a lush forest full of plane trees as well as smalloaks, judas trees, oak trees and it is the natural habitat of many indigenous species, such as deer, wild boar and other animals and birds.

The mountains and hills, together with the stone bridges along the Evinos river are suitable for long walks and hikes in beautiful nature. The cable bridge, named Kareli, in the position Dosoula-Kampos Stranomas on the Evinos river is a spot of particular interest.

Kampos Simou has many facilities catering to tourists such as a horse-riding facility. Simou is 33km away from Nafpaktos, 50 km from Thessaloniki and 239 km from Athens.

Psani

Psani beach is located in the west, a stone’s throw from the Venetian harbor of Nafpaktos. Cars are banned during the summer, so there is plenty of room for pedestrians and cyclists to stroll around safely. Every summer a special ramp (seatrac) in placed on the beach for the disabled, while there is also a lifeguard on duty. Psani beach is ideal for families with young children as it has a pebble beach with crystal-clear, shallow waters and a children’s playground. Elegant hotels, restaurants, taverns, cafes and pastry shops satisfy all visitor needs and desires.

Psani is ideal for swimming when northwest or light northern winds are blowing. Besides the summer, you can take walks and bike along the promenade with the plane trees and the magnificent view the Rio-Antirio bridge in all other seasons of the year also.

Kryoneri

The Kryoneri hamlet is part of the Galatas district of the Municipality of Nafpaktos. It is situated in the foothills of Mount Varasova, next to the estuary of the Evinos river. The coastline of Kryoneri extends from Agios Nikolaos Varasovas to the famous “Kavourotrypa” beach, and there is a wide choice of tourist facilities and enterprises, such as accommodation venues, restaurants and bars, that satisfy all visitor needs. Kryoneri is famous for its organized beach, which for many years is awarded a blue flag for environmental quality by the European Union. The old railroad line Agrinio – Messolonghi – Kryoneri of the historic Northwest Greece Railroad ends right here on the Kryoneri quay – in the old days the wagons would be loaded on to ships to be transferred across the bay to Patras.

Kryoneri is also a popular destination for watersports. Windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world travel to Kryoneri beach to enjoy their sport. Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy scuba diving and open sea fishing as well as paragliding flights for the more daring ones.

Mount Varasova(917m.), also known as the “Holy Mount” of Aitoloakarnania due to the many monasteries and small churches (the most famous one being the Egkleistra of Agios Nikolaos) and the many hermitages that were built on the steep slopes during byzantine times, has been declared a historic area and its natural beauty is simply breathtaking. It is ideal for mountain climbing and hiking and has a panoramic view of the Ionian Sea.

Kryoneri has a great tourist infrastructure and many services available for trainers of watersports and paragliding and for mountain guides. Furthermore, there are many fish taverns serving fresh seafood next to the sea in the shadow of the majestic Mount Varasova.

Kryoneri is 26 km from Nafpaktos, 15 km from Messolonghi, the capital city of Aitoloakarnania and 20 km from the Rio-Antirrion bridge.
